Best Places to See Iceland by Car

Iceland is a place to view beautiful landscapes, from majestic mountain vistas and volcanoes to waterfalls and glaciers, to striking coastlines. The culture here is not to be missed, either, but many of the country’s natural wonders are also accessible by car. If you’re seeing Iceland by car, here are destinations to have on your itinerary.

The Blue Lagoon

One of Iceland’s most popular tourist attractions, the Blue Lagoon lies in an active volcanic region, but it’s not nature’s doing. It was formed from a geothermal power plant in the 1970s. A shimmering lagoon was left behind. Due to its high mineral content, many believe the water has healing power. Strap on a silica mask, get a massage in the water, or admire the view of the backdrop of mountains and lava fields.

Snaefellsnes Glacier and Volcano

If traveling Iceland in roof top campers is your thing, here’s the perfect day trip. There are many sites on this peninsula. See a twin-peaked glacier, jagged lava fields, and the landscape’s dramatic coastline. The basalt cliffs on the coast and an abandoned hamlet top it off. This site has been a National Park since 2001.

South Coast

The South Coast is one of the best sightseeing destinations in the country. Iceland isn’t widely known for its beaches, but you’ll quickly find out why people flock here. Rocky cliffs and fjords give way to black sand, which has been flattened by frequent glacial flooding. Don’t miss the most famous beaches here of all—Reynisfjara. Its haunting landscape and twin basalt pillars are not to be missed.

Golden Circle Tour

If you prefer more structure, take this popular 5-hour sightseeing route. You can do it alone or on a guided tour and see the Geysir Geothermal Area, Gullfoss Waterfall, and Þingvellir National Park, where the landscape has been shaped by the boundary of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. There are also freshwater springs to snorkel or dive.

Eastfjords

Accessible from the Ring Road, the Eastfjords are sparsely populated, so you get away from the crowds. Here, there are cliffs, seascapes, and the massive glacier of Vatnajökull National Park, not to mention the diversity of wildlife, including birds and marine mammals. Despite its remoteness, the Eastfjords are home to small towns and villages where you can get food, lodging, and gas.

Asbyrgi Canyon

If seclusion is your thing, go to Asbyrgi Canyon. The horseshoe-shaped canyon is off the beaten track (although perfect for camping cars in Iceland), but the cliffs and central plateau are dramatic and often-photographed. While you’re here, take a trek through the birch, fir, pine, and willow.
